Why You Should Avail Of Insurance
There is no way that we should carry on without insurance these days. Even if we begrudgingly pay our monthly insurance premiums, we have, on more than one occasion, been grateful that we are covered by two or more forms of insurance. The moment that you are least prepared some kind of contingency is bound to arise.
And we have to be ready to face these head on, in case something worse than a small fire happens in our kitchen. Insurance helps us do just that — face emergencies at times when we are least prepared.
Let me help you understand why insurance has become such a necessity. In order to do this, the five main kinds of insurance will need to be tackled briefly.
Auto Insurance: It is mandatory to have at least basic third party coverage. Although the premiums for comprehensive and collision are higher, the ideal policy would be one that provides coverage for a number of possibilities. You might think you don’t need it, but accidents on the road do happen and it’s better if you are prepared.
Even a small dent on the front door could eat into a lot of your salary. Auto insurance does not promise you won’t get into an accident, but it will certainly help in times of road crisis.
Health Insurance: Aside from the health benefits most companies offer for their employees, individual policies are also available to consumers. HMO is the most popular and least expensive of all kinds of health insurance. The other kinds are PPO (Preferred Provider Organizations), POS (Point of Service), FFS (Fee for Service) and PDC (Prescription Drug Coverage).
A lot of older people opt for PDC, as this kind covers all of their medications. It really does make financial sense to invest in health and medical insurance today. With the costs of medical care rising, we need all the help we can get.
Dental Insurance: Dental benefits are usually included in your health insurance, but if you feel that your teeth will need more than just the usual cleaning, dental insurance is more appropriate. Be aware that dental insurance is a separate policy, and will most likely be more than the usual $10 additional fee to your existing HMO plan.
Dental insurance may not be necessary for you, but your children might benefit. They will most likely need this more than you.
Life Insurance: Life insurance is something that we all know about. Let me talk about how an insurer gains from it. Your family and other loved ones will be well taken cared for when you pass, either unexpectedly or from natural occurrences. This kind of insurance is best for those who travel a lot, work in high risk environments, or have young children to support. With a life insurance policy in place, you are stocking up on the future of your family members as well.
Homeowner Insurance: Irrespective of whether or not you own a house, you would benefit if you availed of homeowner’s insurance. If you live in an area with a high crime rate or natural disasters, have valuable art collections, or just want some peace of mind, it would be a good idea for you to invest in some homeowners’ insurance.
Costmetic Dentistry and Other
Dentistry is the widely used “practical application of knowledge of dental science (the science of placement, arrangement, function of teeth and their supporting bones and soft tissues) to human beings.” I’m sure you can see why in most countries, many years of training are required in university in order to become an actual dentist. A dentist is what we call a professional practitioner of dentistry. This “Dentist” has normally studied between 4-8 years at university and will normally also have alot of practical experience with working on actual patients, often times accompianed by a more experienced dentist.
There is nine different specialties that are branched out from dentistry which all require initial education after the initial dental school. These are:
Dental Public Health – Which is the study of dental epidemiology and social health policies
Endodontics – Which is root canal therapy
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology – Which is the study, diagnosis, and often the treatment of oral and maxillofacial related diseases
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology – Which is the study and radiologic interpretation of oral and maxillofacial diseases
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – Which is the extractions and facial surgery
Orthodontics – Which is straightening of teeth
Pedodontics – Which is pediatric dentistry for children
Periodontics – Which is treatment of gum disease
Prosthodontics – Which is the replacement of missing facial anatomy by prostheses such as dentures, bridges and implants
Often times visiting the Dentis is an un-nerving situation. Rest assured that if you are going to a qualified dentist, they have all of the training that is required to perform what it is that you require. If you are still un-easy or having a problem choosing a dentist in your area, you might want to talk those around you and find out who has had good and bad experiences and where.

Smoking Is Slowly Killing Your Teeth
There are many who consider smoking to be one of the filthiest, least healthy habits a person can have. The typical non-smoker finds cigarette smoke distasteful at best, disgusting at worst. There are also a number of side effects that smoking can have on the body which are damaging, particularly in the long-run. The fact that second-hand smoke does even more damage to non-smokers than it does to smokers does nothing to endear the habit to anyone. However, aside from the obvious respiratory and circulatory repercussions, there are other problems that are associated with smoking. Owing to the close proximity of the gums to the smoke caused by the habit, smokers now make up 50% of people with gum disease in the world.
Smoking has been known to slow the healing process of the body, particularly after surgical procedures. This is especially true for orthodontic and dental surgery, which delve into the areas that receive the most direct exposure to tobacco and nicotine. Damage on the gums was originally found to have been aggravated by smoking, accelerating the rate of decay of the gums and teeth. It was later found that it was possible to have no previous dental damage at all and still suffer from the side effects of smoking, because the smoke itself can cause cellular decay in the gums. Another, recently discovered problem is that the smoke slowly undoes any repairs done to the gums through surgery.
Aside from these issues, there are also a number of other problems that smoking can cause the mouth, teeth, and gums. Plaque, for example, becomes significantly harder to clean off. It is unknown what exactly causes this to happen, but smokers tend to have plaque build-up in their mouths that can only be cleaned off by professional tools. This would not be a problem if a person regularly visits a dentist for teeth cleaning oral prophylaxis, a procedure that should be done every six months. This runs the risk of letting the bacteria in the plaque slowly eat away at the teeth, with some cases seeking help for the problem too late.
There is also a pronounced risk of the bone and support structure of the teeth being eaten away. Smoking is known to slowly kill off the cells in the gums, as well as impede upon natural regeneration in that area. This can be dangerous if the gums and bones that support the teeth are already compromised by bacteria, tooth decay, or other damage. The fibers that hold the teeth in place recede when exposed to tobacco, loosening the teeth. This may be a slow process, but that only makes it such that most people simply fail to notice the problem until it is too late and the damage has already been done.
However, it isn’t just cigarette smoke that causes these problems. Even smoke-less products that are based on tobacco cause this damage, often in comparably similar degrees. According to several studies, both cigars and pipes cause the same cellular degeneration and damage rates as cigarette smoke. So far, all indications point to the problem being firmly rooted in the tobacco in the products and not necessarily the smoke itself.
Tips On How To Go About Diabetes
As a chronic illness, diabetes affects millions of people around the globe. You can be diagnosed with it as a child or a senior citizen or at any age in between. When you need help dealing with this disease, you can turn to articles like these in order to stock up on some great diabetes-specific tips and tactics.
To stay on top of your blood sugar levels, check for blood sugar drops after exercise. Exercising can affect your glucose levels even after it’s over. That’s because the glucose used during long exercise periods comes from your liver, and after you use it up, your body will later try to restore it. If you don’t eat around the time your body tries to do this, the level of sugar in your blood will drop. It’s a good idea to check your blood sugar every 45 minutes after exercising to make sure you can take action to correct any imbalances.
To make sure your blood sugar levels don’t spike or plummet without you realizing it, check your blood sugar regularly and log the results. It’s very common for people to experience dramatic changes in their blood sugar with no initial symptoms. Carefully tracking your levels will help you avoid serious health problems like kidney failure or strokes.
People with diabetes are especially prone to gum disease and dental decay. One of the most important and easy things that you can do for your oral health is to regularly floss and brush your teeth twice a day, as well as see your dentist on a regular basis.
A great tip to handle your diabetes is to maintain consistent eating habits. Skipping meals can lead to overeating which in turn can lead directly to weight gain. This, as you know, is terrible for diabetes and is exactly the opposite of what you should be trying to do. Eat at the same times each day to keep yourself from getting hungry.
Avoid problems with your feet by taking good care of them, keeping excess weight off, and exercising lightly and regularly to increase circulation. By paying close attention to these things you may be able to avoid developing sores on your feet which can eventually lead to infection. This sort of problem frequently causes diabetics to have to undergo foot amputation.
If you are battling illness, you should increase the frequency of your glucose readings. When your body is devoting its resources to fighting off infection, blood sugars can fluctuate in response to the physical and emotional stress that is often linked with sickness. Check glucose and urine ketone levels as often as six times daily during your illness.
As you have just read via the tips provided in this article, there are many things you can do to help control your diabetes. The important thing here is that you act now and never put off controlling this disease, not even for a day. The quicker you start, the quicker you will get a handle on it.
The words dental orthodontics tends to strike fear into the minds and souls of parents across the globe
I recall the first time I encountered the demonic words “dental orthodontics.” I believe they were written on the wall of some burnt down Catholic school with a pentagram painted around them. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Okay, so I just made that up. Regardless, dental orthodontics can give you nightmares if you let it. I have bad dreams about braces bills all the time. There just seem to be no way around them. I’m sure it all will stop once they’re paid for. In all honesty, I have to wonder how two of my children would need braces anyway. Their mother and I both have perfectly straight teeth. We always have; so what went wrong? Anyway, if you do end up dealing with dental orthodontics, I suggest you do some shopping around. You know, maybe compare a few prices here and there. Maybe you want to get jacked into the web and see what the current going rates are. I will tell you, and I want to be totally frank; you’re looking at a good five grand for braces these days. That’s just the way the old cookie crumbles. And I am not even including any additional dental work such as tooth removal or oral surgery. Sometimes these things are also required.
Why not jump online now and check out all there is to know about dental orthodontics and the current costs of braces. This is the best way to get ahead of the game. This way when you meet that orthodontist for a consultation regarding your teenager, you won’t be sitting there in utter shock and disbelief at the cost figures. Be prepared for whatever dental orthodontics visits lie ahead.
What Works for Oral Health?
Recently, within the last seven days actually, I purchased a HydroFloss. A what? Well, it is sort of like a high powered waterpik that uses magnetized water.
Why? For starters, I’m tired of my dentist complaining about my gingivitis which has now become mild to moderate periodontal disease. Will a HydroFloss change that? I honestly don’t know, yet. Based on what I’ve read about them, it may be possible. I’m a skeptic by nature though, but I’m also curious enough to try out different things. Sometimes that strategy works for me and sometimes it doesn’t.
I’ve had a lot of problems with dentists over the years. I don’t believe that all dentists are completely honest. In fact, I had a dentist tell me that I had a ‘trouble spot’ that she wanted to drill into. I went to another dentist who didn’t appear to detect any problem or any ‘trouble spot’ at all. That was after waiting six months. If there was a problem that was going to get worse, it certainly didn’t do so.
Another time, a dentist cheerfully suggested a root canal for a pain I was having in a tooth. I declined. In less than two weeks, that pain went away and never came back, without a root canal being done. That was about 14 years ago. I’ve heard stories from people who went to a dentist to be told that they had several cavities. Upon visiting a different dentist they were told they had none!
I find this trend disturbing. I go to a dentist to maintain my teeth and gums and to make sure that I keep the teeth with minimal damage to the gums. So when unnecessary procedures are recommended, I find it a little annoying. I should be able to trust my dentist but instead, I view her much like I view a car dealership when taking my car in for service. Watch the wallet or get taken. I shouldn’t have to feel that way about my dentist. But I do.
One of the best sales presentations I have ever seen was that of a dental hygienist. She wanted to sell me a ‘root scaling and planing’. During this procedure they anesthetize your gums and use metal instruments to scrape and scale along the root to remove plaque under the gumline.
I bet it hurts a lot when the anesthesia wears off. I was told this was the ‘only’ way to get rid of plaque under the gums. Since I declined the procedure, they wanted me to sign a waiver in case I lost my teeth as a result of not undergoing their prescribed treatment. I viewed this as another scare tactic. It also motivated me to find another solution.
Like I said before, I have only had my HydroFloss for a week, but I like the results I’m seeing so far. When finished using it, I feel like my gums have just had a good massage and it only takes a few minutes to go over my entire gumline.
I asked my dentist what she thought about the HydroFloss. She wasn’t convinced that it was any better than a waterpik. I decided to try it. If my dentist doesn’t like it, it might actually be good for me.
I’m not interested in losing my teeth due to gum disease. I have always kept good care of my teeth. It seems that brushing and flossing are just not enough for most people to avoid periodontal disease or gingivitis. Brushing too hard can erode the gumline, precisely what I wish to avoid. I reason that if I followed the same old advice, I would get the same results.
As for the HydroFloss, I believe I’m seeing a difference already, but I can’t be sure. There are no double blind studies being conducted on my body. My results are subjective. But I think I’ll know for sure in about a month. For now, I’m impressed.
If you have any questions about what your dentists finds or suggests, you may want to get a second opinion. That doesn’t hurt!

Environmental Or Conventional Dentistry: It’s Your Choice
Conventional dental and dentists’ practice help many people enjoy excellent dental and oral function for years. Conventional dentistry’s stature throws dentists practicing alternative dentistry methods into obscurity. Lina Garcia, DMD, a so-called environmental dentist clears up several issues regarding the untraditional means that they practice. She also exposes several ways how conventional dentistry procedures harm patients and the environment.
Environmental dentistry does not differ widely from conventional practices. But they do uphold a principle: the mouth as an integrated member of a person’s body and must be treated using this perspective. The primary objective of environmental dental and dentists’ practice is to treat dental and oral problems without causing harm and adverse effects on the body. Environmental dentists claim that conventional dental procedures often use methods that are harmful to the body over time. Environmental dentistry’s recent findings indicate that some of the most basic services of conventional dentists are hazardous for the patients and their environment. Garcia identifies these problems as the common and basic services patients often ask from their dentists. Amalgam fillings, root canals, cavitations, implants, surgery, and the use of stainless steel in the oral cavity are cited in a report by Garcia. According to her, amalgam fillings are still 50% mercury which make them dangerous and toxic when ingested. Root canals also cause more mouth problems because they encourage the growth of bacteria; it is also the same with cavitations. Environmental dentistry also abhors the use of implants without bio-compatibility testing. They claim that it aggravates the immuno-defense system and often start allergies and negative reactions. They also cite the results of studies that indicate that use of stainless steel in any open body part is a cause of cancer.
The critiques from environmental dentistry are many but the conventional dentistry explains these as nuisance. Conventional dentists assert that the mercury in amalgam filling is converted to a non-toxic substance once it reacts with the oral fluids and bacteria. They also cite lack of evidence and proof to support the environmental practice’s claim on the relation of dental care to other major diseases like heart disease and cancer. Conventional dental and dentists’ service providers encourage patients to consult only dentists who advocate scientific treatment. What they termed “holistic” practices such as environmental dentistry, are often unsafe and poses serious health risks.
Both camps have their cards on the table. I think that it is up to you, as patients to decide in which practice you feel comfortable with: a “holistic” environmental practice or scientific and clinical dentistry? I strongly advise research and making informed choices when it comes to health matters.
Dental Plans – Good Business Sense
The many Simpsons fans among us will remember with great poignancy the episode in which Homer becomes a bigwig in the Nuclear power plant’s union. Just like almost every other episode of the classic show, there are a multitude of brilliant moments that can be carried forward into every day life, creating great annoyance among our friends as we quote the cartoon characters ad nauseam. But there is a particular moment that holds sway over those of us with oral issues – the instant in which Homer, confused as he usually is, tries to remember why he shouldn’t make a deal with the devil, or in this case, his boss. With thoughts of his daughter’s urgent need for orthodontal work lying just beyond his reach, the words ‘dental plan!’ repeat over and over in his mind.
As usual, animated shows have insightfully pointed a spotlight on an area of our lives that requires serious attention. There is little doubt that a healthy smile is an important part of general health, contributing as it does to both our physiological and psychological wellbeing – experts have noted a correlation between instances of what might seem like the fairly innocuous gum disease with occurrences of far more life threatening heart attacks – and yet businesses across America are coming short in their employee care by neglecting to look after this important aspect of employee health.
Needing to find ways to cut back on costs, corporate America is increasingly slicing dental plans from its list of priorities. And while there is little doubt that companies need to remain as lean as they can during tough times, employees are, without question, one of the most valuable resources that any business possesses. Study after study has proven that a happy worker is a productive worker, and an employee without something as apparently insignificant as a dental plan is not being treated with the respect that would optimize his or her output. This is particularly true of workers with young children or teenagers, who are particularly likely to require dental intervention.
The simple truth is that employers must find other ways to reduce costs – taking any action that ultimately results in lowered staff morale is not the answer. While a dental plan might not seem a powerful tool in a company’s arsenal against failure, the employees that avail of such a plan most certainly are. Providing employees with a good dental plan is undoubtedly a significant step towards corporate success.
Children And Halitosis, Bad Breath
Children can have bad breath just as easily as their parents. When the Webmaster of badbreathgone.com asked me to write an article on halitosis (bad breath) and children, my first thought was, “Great, a no brainer!” As an RN and mother who also works in close contact with children in a daycare, I’ve got plenty of good insight into halitosis in our little ones.
When you smell the breath of a healthy child it smells fresh and clean. If it doesn’t, then use this checklist of the most probable causes of the halitosis/bad breath:
1. Dehydration.(which is more common than most people suspect)
2. Overeating and consequent poor digestion.
3. Eating food that promotes yeast/ candida.
4. Incipient or undiagnosed illness/ infection, low immune system.
5. Too much sugar.
6. Dental problems.
7. Not well-rested, too much activity.
As a parent and RN I often try to smell a child’s breath. I can tell you that the children who come to the ER with bronchitis or asthma all have halitosis/ bad breath. Why? Because they have an infection and/or food allergy, and 9 times out of 10 are dehydrated.
So what can parents and caregivers do to give our children sweet smelling breath?
1. Be sure your child drinks enough water – and I mean water – not juices or soda. Juices, and soda particularly, dehydrate your child and load up the system with sugar. And sugar provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, viruses and parasite fungus/ yeast and candida.
2. Monitor your child’s eating. Too much food, or food eaten too often, will not digest properly, and will ferment and create toxicity that smells bad.
3. Sugar – again. White sugar increases halitosis, and also nourishes infections and yeast infections/ candida. Cut it down, or better, cut it out if you want fresh breath (and many other benefits besides).
4. Halitosis is a sign that the body needs something. It could be as simple as more water, or perhaps the entire immune system needs a boost. See my article on flu to help boost your child’s immune system.
5. Be sure to have regular dental check-ups. I could say much more about this, but let’s keep it simple. Just follow through and make those appointments.
6. Watch how your child is doing…? Too much activity? Not enough quality rest? Some kind of emotional distress? Imbalances both physical and emotional can “sour” the stomach, turning good food into bad. I’ve found that bad breath can provide great motivation for parents to get closely tuned to their children and really work for their well-being.
Some simple remedies to freshen the mouth are a drop of Oil of Oregano under the tongue or on the toothbrush, and chewing on a clove. While drugstores have whole shelves full of products to sweeten halitosis/ bad breath, many products contain ingredients that I would not myself take. Be careful – if you routinely ingest a small amount of “helpful” toxins, that can really add up as the days run to weeks, months and years.
